Does ultrasound guidance guarantee success?

For example, a steroid injection may help a painful inflammatory flare but is usually a short-term pain-relieving treatment. Hyaluronic acid may suit selected osteoarthritis patients but tends to work more gradually. Arthrosamid may be considered for selected knee osteoarthritis patients, with slower onset and longer-term treatment aims. PRF aims to support healing biology, but PRF-specific percentage evidence remains more limited than for some other products.

Your appointment starts with assessment. Existing scans can be helpful, but they are not always required. The clinician will discuss your symptoms, examine the area, and use ultrasound where needed to assess the target.
If injection is appropriate, the area is cleaned and the ultrasound probe is used during the procedure. Local anaesthetic may be used depending on the treatment. You will receive aftercare advice before leaving.
What should I do after an injection?
Most patients are advised to rest the treated area for 24-48 hours and avoid heavy activity initially. A gradual return to activity is usually recommended. If you develop severe worsening pain, fever, spreading redness, significant swelling, or feel unwell, seek medical advice urgently because infection, while rare, is important.
People with diabetes should be aware that steroid injections can temporarily raise blood sugar.
